Joe & Paul - The Best Of The Barton BrothersProduced and released by BB Music in 1999 and distributed by Hatikvah Music, "Joe & Paul - The Best Of The Barton Brothers" is a compilation taken from an early microgroove re-issue of The Barton Brothers' early 78 sides, their best and most popular as well as commercially successful material.
The Barton Brothers, or Eddie and Joe Bart, were neither brothers nor named Bart or Barton. Originally a comedy act performing in non-Jewish vaudeville and supper-clubs, they were inspired by a frequent commercial for Joe & Paul's clothing store on local New York City Jewish radio programming to enter Yiddish comedy music entertainment in 1947. When they came up with "Joe & Paul", they'd found a natural hit and quickly found an enterprising indie label, cutting a quick succession of sides including the present ones. The Barton Brothers' quick-fire, almost breathless Yiddish (and occasionally English) monologues are underscored and punctuated by some of the edgiest klezmer music of the time. In addition to achieving popular and commercial success, The Barton Brothers also became a major influence in the world of Yiddish comedy music. Famed comedy musician, clarinettist Mickey Katz, acknowledged that their success inspired him to leave Spike Jones' City Slickers and embark on his career as the best-known Jewish comedy musician of the 1950s.
The main interest of this album is obviously historic and nostalgic. It is a treasure trove of American Yiddish musical comedy of the late 1940s, as well as of the klezmer musical performance style of the era. The liner notes sum it up best in stating "...it is both a milestone and a window to how much fun that entertainment world must have been." And it definitely still is vital and fun.
