The Brandeis-Bardin International Klezmer Ensemble
The Brandeis-Bardin International Klezmer Ensemble's (aka Hollywood Klezmer) sef-titled album is an own-label release, originally released in 1995.
This collection by The Brandeis-Bardin Klezmer Ensemble, who are now better known as Hollywood Klezmer, is something a little bit special. On the face of it, the overall sound has somewhat traditional Old World, Eastern European klezmer overtones, with the occasional hint of New World klezmer sound and a good dollop of contemporary sound for good measure. But listen, there's also a delightful mix of klezmer, Sephardic and other Middle Eastern influences, here and there blended with gentle touches of jazz, swing, and even classical. Touches of Bluegrass also surface occasionally, particular in the violin's style. Technically flawless, The Brandeis-Bardin Klezmer Ensemble display fine musicianship and excellent ensemble playing throughout.
Highlights include "Russian Sher" with its compelling, lively fiddle that would not seem out of place in a 'grass fiddler's convention. Some very fine clarinet, including good use of the chalumeau, distinguishes "Kale Bazetzn". "Tribal Dance" at once reminds of Chassidic nigunim and Sephardic and Middle Eastern styles. "Tantz, Tantz, Yiddelekh" is given a lift with an enchanting reggae beat and also features a superb clarinet part - this baby really swings and rocks. The closer, "Yiddisher Tantz", should get everybody's feet moving.
Overall, an enjoyable, fun album that certainly makes one want to explore more recordings form The Brandeis-Bardin Klezmer Ensemble, or rather, Hollywood Klezmer as they're now known and under which name they have also recorded.
